Did you know sitting for too long, all day, every day, makes your life shorter? The evolution of the human body has been centered on standing upright and walking, meaning our modern, desk-centric lives has increased the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other metabolic illnesses.
The solution? Get moving. “But I’m too busy to leave my desk,” we hear you say.

No More Excuses
Then make your desk exercise friendly. Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic, US, has been very worried about the health of desk-jockeys, so he’s come up with a plan: The Desk Treadmill.

And it does exactly what it says on the tin. He’s taken a treadmill, combined it with a desk, and now you can truly flex your ability to multi-task. Don’t worry about face-planting in front of all your colleagues, though: the Treadmill Desk runs at a leisurely 2km/h, and users of all ages and fitness levels can burn about 100 calories per 2km.

And when your health and wellbeing is at stake, what’s an investment of approximately $2000 in your longevity? Even Google and Microsoft have seen the value in getting their staff moving and have set up communal areas with desk treadmills. But you don’t need to be a cube-farm corporate giant with a massive budget…

Home-made versions also can be easily made using, well, a desk and a treadmill. Just watch those speed settings.

And for the desk-bound exercise bunnies out there, you can even pimp your treadmill with other equipment, like this model with a built in Pilates ball.

Think speed-walking is for girls? Try the spinning version. Just go easy on the cardio when on the phone to clients…
