The Basics
Business plan
It doesn’t matter what kind of business you are starting, you must prepare a business plan. In order to write the business plan it is also necessary to conduct thorough research.
The online marketing environment changes fast
As connectivity options change, the online marketing environment adapts along with it. In the past most users accessed the online environment from their computers, now, many can supplement normal usage with mobile devices (cell phones).
This makes it possible for companies to expand their markets even further by including SMS and MMS marketing strategies in combination with e-newsletters, pay per click advertising and search engine optimisation.
What is high-speed internet access?
High-speed internet access, which is also known as broadband internet, is a way of connecting to the internet at a much faster speed compared to dial-up internet.
What types of high-speed internet access are available?
While there are a number of high-speed internet services available, the most common are Cable, ADSL, Wireless and Satellite.
What is the difference between upstream and downstream speeds?
Downstream speeds refer to how fast information travels to the computer, such as when downloading a file. Upstream speeds refer to how fast information travels from the computer, such as sending an email attachment.
Internet modems
A 56 Kbps (kilobytes per second) modem is a good starting point for Internet access and lower end applications, especially those homes or businesses on a modest budget.
Broadband
Cable can be used to access and connect to the Internet. It is used for high-speed Internet access. Cable providers use an infrastructure of fibre optic wires to connect to the Internet. Cable Internet is better than dial-up for a number of reasons. The main one being the increased speed. For example, downloading a music file with a dial-up connection can take twenty minutes but with a Cable Internet connection, it will be finished in two minutes.
ISDN Services
You can use Primary Rate Integrated Services Digital Network (PRI ISDN) to both access the Internet and connect your network to the Internet. It is a dial-up service and does not require a modem. It’s quite a bit faster than modem service.
ADSL Internet
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) was the first digital technology to bring high-bandwidth to homes. ADSL speeds tend to lag behind Cable broadband internet services. ADSL is an excellent Internet access solution for homes and small businesses.
It is an affordable and easy-to-install way to access and connect to the Internet. ADSL ‘always on’ service accesses the Internet over ordinary phone lines at speeds up to eight Mbps (megabyte per second) for downloads and one Mbps for uploads. ADSL is a type of DSL technology used for connecting to the Internet.
ADSL allows more data to be sent over existing copper telephone lines. A special filter is installed on a subscriber’s telephone line to allow both ADSL and regular telephone services to be used at the same time. ADSL requires a special ADSL modem.
Satellite Internet
Satellite Internet is one method of experiencing a broadband connection. Telkom Internet is powered by Satellite means Internet access without the constraints and congestion of terrestrial based telephone lines. With no special phone lines required, Telkom Internet is powered by Satellite is the logical solution for improved access speeds to the Internet, from almost anywhere.
LAN (local area network)
Wireless Local Area Network (LAN) targets a relatively small area, usually within an office, a building, a store, a small campus, a residence or a small office/home office. Wireless Network is a connection between computers that is made through radio frequencies instead of through cables.
WANs (wide area network)
This wireless network is also used to connect LANs to WANs providing a wide range of flexible options to choose from for your unique business needs. It is an “always on” service.
3G connection
3G is a high-speed wireless data application that is used for cellular data transmission. The major industries driving the 3G technology are the advertising industry, e-commerce industry and the entertainment industry.
Regulations for internet TV streaming Station
“For this kind of business a licence is not required,” explains Ambrose. However, if you need to check anything, contact the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) who is responsible for regulations and licences for broadcasting in South Africa.
The Internet Service Providers’ Association is a South African Internet industry body that can also give valuable advice. ISPA currently has many members, comprised of large, medium and small Internet service and access providers in South Africa.
Equipment
Contact ISPA and web hosting companies to establish the type of equipment this kind of business would require.
