“People join companies but leave bosses. We believe people should join companies because of great bosses,” says Gavin Symanowitz, MD of GetAGreatBoss.com.He’s developed an online tool that companies can use to get feedback from staff on how good (or bad) their boss is. “Staff log on to the platform and fill out an anonymous questionnaire about their boss, who gets to review the feedback. If there are some comments he wishes to explore further, the system allows him to send an email to the person who posted the comment, and the two of them can then enter into a private online discussion, all the while protecting the anonymity of the staff member in question,” Symanowitz explains.
Hatching the idea
Symanowitz counts himself as lucky to have worked for a first-rate boss. “I realised that there are many great bosses out there like him – job-seekers want to work for them, companies want to hire them, recruiters want them on their books – but that no-one outside of the company (and sometimes inside it) knows how good they are. In a short skills market, there’s a real need to identify such people,” he says. Knowing the value of a great boss, he started thinking about how they could be promoted and realised how many different stakeholder groups would benefit from such information. GetAGreatBoss.com was born.
Multiple target markets
GetAGreatBoss.com helps good bosses promote themselves as such, thereby enabling them to attract and retain top talent and boost their resumé. But it’s not just targeted at corporates and individual bosses. “It can be used by recruiters, HR professionals and online job portals to identify the best bosses available in the market,” Symanowitz adds. “Online job portals can post a ‘Want to Know What the Boss is Like?’ icon next to those jobs where the boss has been assessed by staff using the GetAGreatBoss.com tool. This immediately shows jobseekers who the best bosses are to work for and gives them first-hand insight from the people who already work in the company. They can click on the icon and read the reviews.”
A useful tool for smes
It’s also an incredibly useful tool for SMEs which can’t compete with large organisations on salary or brand pulling power to attract the best talent. “Being a great boss, especially if you have been identified as such by the people who work for you, is an enormous differentiator when it comes to employing – and keeping – people. It’s a big trump card for entrepreneurs but they need to leverage its value; this tool helps them to do that,” he says. Companies pay per staff review and the product is priced to be affordable for SMEs as well as corporates. “You need a minimum of eight employees but the cost stays the same whether you have eight or 800. You simply pay per review,” he concludes.
