48. Hlengiwe Vilakati
Vital Stats:
- Business: Jo Anke Gallery
- Established: 2009
Up-and-coming fact:
After a 12-year corporate career, Vilakati saw a need for specialist galleries that focus largely on emerging artists and decided it was more influential than her marketing and advertising career.
One of South Africa’s few black-run art galleries, Jo Anke Gallery’s purpose is to sell art created by young South African artists. Established as a tool for social integration, Vilakati believes that clients need to get acquainted with new names. They can do so by either visiting the website and browsing a range of contemporary paintings, photographs and sculptures, or going to the physical gallery in Bramley, Johannesburg, where exhibitions are often held.
