Tech-in-Braam is a new ICT cluster development programme aimed at infusing Braamfontein with a hive of skills training, job creation and enterprise development activity. The technology hub, Tshimologong Precinct, is the first step in developing a Braamfontein ICT cluster.
The hub is the brainchild of University of the Witwatersrand’s Joburg Centre for Software Engineering (JCSE) head, professor Barry Dwolatzky.
The precinct is in close proximity to two universities, Wits and the University of Johannesburg, is centrally located, accessible by public transport and is within easy reach of a plethora of businesses in Braamfontein and nearby Johannesburg.
Located on Juta Street, the hub consists of five adjacent properties that were purchased by Wits University. The buildings include a former nightclub, a warehouse and office and retail space. The JCSE is driving the multi-million rand upgrade.
In addition to the buildings, Wits has provided some seed funding. The City of Johannesburg has already invested in the installation of an extension of its B-Wired fibre network to enable seamless wired and wireless connectivity.
Once complete, the precinct will feature:
- Open plan co-working areas
- Meeting and chill rooms
- Restaurants
- Coffee bars
- Gym and events arena
- Server room
- Training rooms
- Computer lab
- Administrative workspace
- Retail area
- Development pods.
