The animated parody begins with text reading “Dinner time at Nkandla,” in front of a mansion, and depicts Jacob Zuma sitting down to dinner with his huge family of women and children. As the family enjoys their fish and chips, Zuma says:
“Eat up honeybunch, there’s a lot of good food here. It’s from the Fish & Chip Company.” Then, using a calculator he says: “There are many of you in this house, at only R25, even Pravin will approve this.”
Taste Holdings responds
Taste Holding’s CEO, Carlo Gonzaga says: “It was never our intention to make an advert that would be banned. It is our opinion that no reasonable person would conclude that the President of the country is endorsing a product because:
a) The ad is a parody and done in a cartoon style; b) The President never endorses products or brands; c) The ad is clearly over the top in its execution and humour.” He continues: “We do not wish to get involved in a legal debate about the advert, and we accept the position of the SABC to not flight the commercial.
However, if President Zuma objects to the use of his image on other channels, we will offer to donate R100 000 to a charity of the President’s choice.”
