The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation has commenced its selection campaign whereby Grade 6’s can apply for a high school scholarship to become Allan Gray Scholars in Grade 8. Successful candidates will join the existing 153 Scholars at 20 of South Africa’s leading schools.
The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation aims to support and develop a new generation of dynamic entrepreneurial leaders as a means of creating jobs and eradicating poverty in Southern Africa. Every year, the Foundation selects the brightest and the most ambitious Grade 6, Grade 12 and first year university students to join one of its programmes, which provides comprehensive financial support to further their education and provides exposure and development in entrepreneurial leadership.
Who qualifies
The Scholarship is open to current South African Grade 6s who will start Grade 8 in 2014. The Scholarship requirements are that learners have exceptional ability in Mathematics and English and would otherwise not be able to afford high quality schooling. Learners must also embody the characteristics necessary to be an Allan Gray Scholar; such as wisdom and knowledge, courage, leadership and vision.
The first step in the application process requires the learner to complete an application form. Upon the receipt of the application form, candidates that meet these requirements will proceed through a series of tests which provide a clearer picture of the applicant’s abilities. Those who successfully complete this phase will be interviewed and the most deserving of these are then invited to attend one of the Foundation’s Selection Camps, which is the final stage of the selection process.
