On National Heritage Day, also known as braai day, 26-year-old Sowetan chef and caterer Sekhabile Lekgoate beat the Guinness world record for the longest continuous braai.
Lekgoate was one of the original entrepreneurs for the Awethu Project’s business incubation programme in 2010. Three years later he’s running his own catering business… and attempting to get his name into the Guinness Book of World Records.
Sekhabile is the owner and founder of BraWor, a catering company that offers corporate and private braai events with chisa nyama flair.
The braai took place at Constitution Hill in Braamfontein, from the evening of Saturday 21 September until Tuesday 24 September, setting a new world record for the longest consecutive hours spent cooking meat over an open flame. Sekhabile spent an impressive 63 hours at the grill.
“I could only take five minutes’ break every hour… a total of 5 hours max, in almost three days!”
“It’s more than just about getting into the record books,” he says. He wanted to create a fun event that will promote chisa nyama in its own right.
